2010 Central Florida Dulcimer & Autohop Festival Flyer page 2 Note the following Changes for the Upcoming 2010 Festival-Our 5th Year! Jam Sessions (Slow & Fast) are scheduled at 10:30-11:45 a.m. on Friday morning. Arrive early & warm-up.

Soft drinks (Coke, Diet Coke & Sprite) will be available for purchase during Festival hours in addition to bottled water and coffee. Participants can bring their own drinks (non-alcoholic) if they choose. There are no vending machines at the Church Property. Many stores are located on US Hwy 441 (north of Hwy 46.) Friday Box lunches can be ordered & a Catered Dinner will be served on Friday night this year. Include your order for meal tickets & lunch selections for both days, Friday and Saturday, on the Registration form.

Carpeting now resides in all of the new building classrooms–this was completed soon after the 2009 Festival! Second Floor Classrooms will be used at times during the Festival with access via staircase. If you need assistance to carry your instrument upstairs (Mtn. Dulcimer or Autoharp classes) or if you are unable to climb a staircase, please contact Ruth Harnden for assistance in identifying lower level workshop classes.

During Saturday Lunch break, there will be two “Mini-Demo” sessions not on Workshop Schedule: (1) Chuck Spano – Playing the Irish Bodhran – Learn why this hand drum is fun to play and sounds so good. (2) Dick Bozung, INSTANT (no fingerings) Dulcimer/Guitar/Banjo/Ukulele Chordings –use instrument “open tunings” to play chords with no complicated fingerings & new ways to play barre chords to make quick chord changes.

SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABILITY Scholarship funds are available for both Adults and Youth to provide financial assistance for Festival registration fees. You may request a scholarship for yourself or for another candidate. Please contact Ruth Harnden directly for information and/or application for a 2010 Scholarship Award. Scholarship funds have been raised through the sale of our Central Florida Festival canvas bags and raffle ticket sales over the years. We thank the many Workshop Instructors and Vendors who have generously donated a variety of products as prizes for the Scholarship fund raffles each year. In 2009, Rick Thum donated a hammered dulcimer package as a raffle prize. For 2010, builder David Beede is donating one of his unique instruments, the “Eedy Beede” Mountain Dulcimer for use in our scholarship raffle.

2010 Festival WORKSHOP LEADERS ( * = 1st year Instructor Honoree)

*Cheryl & Ray Belanger:

Cheryl has taught autoharp for over 18 years in FL and NC. She is a Fl State championship winner, a singer, songwriter, recording artist, a Certified Music Practitioner in healing music and an acclaimed teacher. Ray has been a performing singer and musician for over 35 years. He is a creative teacher and well-known for his enthusiastic and sensitive performances on hammered dulcimer. Ray & Cheryl perform together in their group “Simple Gifts” and reside in Tampa, FL.

Suz Chapman:

A dulcimer player since her first visit to “August Dulcimer Daze” in Vermont. Suz combines vocals with guitar and dulcimer in her folk music and performs with her husband Charlie, a singer and harmonica player. They have produced two CD recordings. She is a frequent workshop leader, gatherer of musicians, known as a “jam junkie” and resides in Lakeland, FL.

 

Doug Felt:

A teacher since 1995, also known as the “Dead Tree Troll,” Doug loves to play music. He can be found at his festival “Bag Lady Booth” with his wife Lee, or performing onstage at festivals throughout the country. Doug is a versatile musician and teacher and seldom misses a chance to play music on mtn. dulcimer, pennywhistle or bodhran. Doug resides in Marengo, OH.

Guy George:

A rhythmic, melodic hammered dulcimer player and includes a definite jazz influence with his music. Guy tours throughout the US & Canada to perform and teach dulcimer, pennywhistle and steel drum. He studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and has many recordings to his credit with many outstanding artists. Guy presently resides in Concord, OH. 2010

 

Tull Glazener:

Tull travels across the country for performances and festivals, and has spent many years teaching workshops as the small community of mountain dulcimer players expanded. Tull‟s travels are his way to give back to the music and community of folks that have brought him so much joy. His playing is unique and inspirational to all. Tull resides in Indianapolis, IN.

 

George Haggerty:

A mountain Dulcimer builder, teacher and player. His enthusiasm is apparent in his workshops which provide a solid foundation for the dulcimer student. His love of old-time music and creative nature are reflected through expression and strong feelings depicted in his music. George operates Folk Craft Music of Vermont with his wife and they reside in Jacksonville, VT.

 

*Susan Boyer Haley:

Susan is a 4th generation American folk musician of the Boyer family. Her music includes family tunes, Celtic roots and Appalachian tunes played on the mountain dulcimer and included in her vocals. She spent two years in Blount County, AL as an Artist-In-Residence teacher to rural school children. Susan is a frequent workshop teacher and resides in Clearwater, FL.

 

Lorraine Lee Hammond:

A renowned master of the Appalachian dulcimer whose command of the instrument is exceptional. She also plays banjo, mandolin, Celtic folk harp, and is an expressive singer and songwriter, often performing with her husband, Bennett. Her repertoire ranges in style from Classical music to Celtic, Folk, Blues and Contemporary. Lorraine resides in Brookline, MA.

 

John Hawk:

A Mountain Dulcimer player for over 19 years who splits his time in Leesburg, FL and Franklin, NC. John is known for his different & unique style of playing up tempo tunes. His enthusiasm for the old-time music and adding twists to familiar tunes results in his creative music making. John plays tinwhistle and Native American flutes in performances with the mountain dulcimer.

*Anne Lough: A well-known instructor and performer of traditional folk music at festivals and the John Campbell Folk Center, Anne shares a life-long involvement with the music. Anne‟s sensitive playing, versatility and skill as an instructor is nationally recognized. Her repertoire includes Classical music, old standards, show tunes and Shaped- Note sacred music. Anne resides in Waynesville, NC.

*Maddie MacNeil:

The silver-haired woman with the golden voice performs her magic with both mountain and hammered dulcimer. She owned and published Dulcimer Players News for 25 years, inspiring & propelling a small dulcimer community to the current world wide community of dulcimer enthusiasts. Maddie has numerous recordings and is the author of many books currently published by Mel Bay Publications and others. When not travelling & teaching around the globe, Maddie resides in Berryville, VA.

Adam Miller:

A legendary folksinger, storyteller and autoharp Virtuoso, Adam provides folklore & folk music programs across the nation and is a frequent and popular workshop leader. Adam has a repertoire of more than 5000 traditional and contemporary folk songs and has distinguished himself as one of the great interpreters of American folk music. He resides in Drain, OR.

Ivan Stiles:

A native Floridian, Ivan is known across the country as an autoharpist of unique ability in all areas, as a performer, recording artist, instructor and author. Ivan was co-founder/editor of the Autoharp Quarterly until 1997 and has been inducted in to the Autoharp Hall of Fame. Ivan also plays mountain dulcimer and musical saw and now resides in Phoenixville, PA.

Rick Thum:

Rick was the 1994 Southwest Regional Dulcimer Contest 1st place winner and 3rd place winner at the 1995 Winfield, KS National Championships. Rick played guitar, drums & trumpet in earlier years and was Director of his Church choir. Rick travels around the country to teach and perform and he is the owner/builder of Rick Thum Dulcimers of High Ridge, Missouri. He provides lessons internationally on CD or audio tape via his “Song of the Month Club” & has many recordings. Rick resides in Eureka, MO

*Susan Trump:

Susan has been a favorite on the dulcimer scene for over twenty years and has taught at major dulcimer camps, workshops & festivals. She is known for her clear teaching style and interesting playable arrangements. She has authored several books and was the producer of Vol.1&2 of Masters of the Mountain Dulcimer. She offers “Lessons in Your Living Room,” a monthly series of lessons with TAB and instructional CD, for beginning to intermediate level. Susan resides in Schenectady, NY.

Carolee Stewart:

Co-director of the LEAD Players (Lake Eustis Area Dulcimer Players.) Lives in Eustis, FL & teaches Mountain, Hammered Dulcimer, Bowed Psaltery & Autoharp. Previously owner of Wood, Strings & Dulcimers of Greenville, SC, active in local festivals, workshops & music events & assists Ruth Harnden with the annual Central Florida Dulcimer & Autohop Festival.

 

*Ruth Harnden:

Ruth is the founder of the Central Florida Dulcimer and Autohop Festival. Her delight in the dulcimer is contagious. She teaches mountain dulcimer, bowed psaltery and beginning autoharp. She is contact person for the Mount Dora Dulcimer Society and Co-director of the LEAD Players. Ruth lives in Sorrento, FL and is originally from Massachusetts. REGISTER EARLY = Workshops are limited to 30 participants perworkshop. Indicate 2nd Choices.

 

Playing Levels: **All levels require participant to have a TUNED instrument ready for workshops**

Beginner (ALL): New player, ready to build playing skills and has some basic knowledge of instrument.

Novice (MD/AUH): Can tune, plays a few tunes (from memory) some knowledge of rhythm, melody line, & chords.

Novice/Intermediate (HD): Knows several tunes, using basic chords, increasing skill level, & learning to embellish.

Intermediate/Advanced (MD/AUH): Tune repertoire, knows chords, modes, explores playing styles & techniques.

Advanced (HD): Experienced player, new tunes & skills learned quickly, personal style developing & knows what to do.
